SHS - Spectator Sportsmanship- Always positive!

Good morning, Sheldon families,

The overwhelming majority of spectators of the Sheldon community follow the OSAA sportsmanship guidelines well.  However, especially as we approach the playoffs, it seems like an important opportunity to remind everyone of the high standards of conduct and sportsmanship the Sheldon community expects.

Rule 3 of the OSAA Handbook (Pg. 22 of the OSAA Handbook or the 31st page of the pdf) articulates policies that guide schools and spectators in maintaining appropriate conduct at athletic contests.

A short summary is basically that spectators may only cheer in support of their own team and may not criticize officials and/or coaches or cheer against the opposing team.

A few things to keep in mind:

• Our dedicated officials

  • Being a high school sports official is challenging due to the high pressure of making split-second decisions under intense scrutiny from coaches, players, and fans.  Our officials must not only be experts on the rulebook, but need to maintain a strong understanding of complex rules and apply them consistently across different situations.  Our spectators should not add to the challenge… Please offer these dedicated officials support….. It is a tough job!   Spectators may not yell criticism or question the judgment calls of our officials.

  • The appropriate person to have conversations with officials about game management (calls, penalties, etc.) is the head coach.  The Sheldon coaches will advocate for their teams and players with officials in a respectful manner.  We should all be proud of the conduct and dedication of our Sheldon coaching staff!

  • Being a high school sports coach is challenging due to a combination of factors including managing diverse student-athletes with different skill levels, dealing with parental pressure, navigating complex team dynamics, balancing academics with athletics, limited resources, and the constant pressure to win while also fostering positive development in young players; all while often working with a significant time commitment (while managing other jobs).  Our spectators should not add to the challenge… Please offer these dedicated coaches support….. It is a tough job!   Spectators may not yell criticism or question the judgment calls of our coaches.

  • Our coaches need space to guide the team and all athletes.  The coaches are incredibly well informed of the rules, game dynamics, and skills of their athletes and the athletes of opposing teams.  Please give them space to guide all athletes, including those close to you, by keeping voices private and not approaching the staff or athletes during athletic contests.

• Our opposing teams

  • The Sheldon community should support our fellow athletes, parents, and coaches from other schools.  Remember these individuals are really members of our community and want the same thing that we do…. For their team to represent themselves well.  

  • If a member of another team or spectator from another sports community is not following the OSAA spectator guidelines, then please seek the support of the Sheldon Athletic Director, Chris Mitchell,  another Sheldon administrator, or other Sheldon personnel in charge of managing the athletic contest.

Again, Sheldon Athletics is known as a passionate community that demonstrates sportsmanship and support for all.  Please continue to add to this reputation by cheering for Sheldon athletes, and refraining from criticism of coaches and officials.  Additionally, support our opponents in competing their best and hope they feel welcomed in our arenas.
